Chatting with all users on a public channel

If you're in novice mode: Just press the 'Chat' button.
To choose a channel, select the menu option: Chat->Get channels list, or press the channel button (in expert mode) to retrieve the channel list. Browse the list till you find the channel you wish to join. Double-click OR click once and then press join to join that channel. Once in, you can chat with all the users in the channel by typing into the text dialogue at the bottom and pressing return. To leave the chat, press the in the upper right hand corner of the chat window.

Once you have one channel open you can also type /j channelname to join another channel, where you replace channelname with the actual name of the channel you wish to join. (Case-sensitive!)

Chatting with a specific person

To chat with a specific person, you may either initiate a chat from your friends list (see "How to manage friends") or start a chat from a main channel. To establish a private chat, double click on the nick of the person you wish to have a private chat with in the public channel, or right click and select either private chat or DCC (direct client chat) chat. Both will be one to one chats.

Searching for files you want

To search for a file you require press the Search icon and enter in at least the first few letters of the file you are searching for in the field provided. You may also specify if you want to search Only Files On-line at the moment or all files on record, if you wish you may even specify a minumun connection speed or a file category.
You can also specify if you want to perform a Global search (all users currently On-line) or a Room search (users in the current channel).

Another way to find the files you are after is by asking for users lists inside a chat, to do this double click a users name in the user list (in a private chat right click on the chat area and Ask for Users list). The list will download to you and open automatically. Just select the files you want and press the 'Download' button or double click the file.

Sharing a set of files

PLEASE NOTE: in novice mode all of this should be automatic so were presuming were in expert mode for the following.
To share your files with other Filetopians you must make a list of the files you want to share and make the list and directory there stored in available to them. To make a list of your files and share the directories there stored in do the following:

Select File - New List and browse for the directory (or directories) your files are located in. To select a directory once you have found it either choose Add w/Subdirectories (selects the directory you have chosen and any other sub directories in side it) OR Add single (selects just the single directory). Once you have done that make sure "Share the selected directories" is selected (this allows users to access the directories) and "Make list master and autosend" is selected. Choose which type of list you would like: Dynamic or Static (Dynamic lists are created on the fly and make the directories truly shared, Static lists are a list of files that were in the directory at the time the list was made so adding files to the directory will not change these lists, they need to be updated manually. The advantage of static lists is that unlike dynamic lists static lists can store descriptions of your files. Once you have done all this you may create your list by choosing Create. Once your list is created (it may take some time if your collection is massive) you must save it, to do so select File - Save List OR press F2, chose a name for your list (your username perhaps) and select Save.
To make your list available to other users do the following:
Go to Options - Lister and were it asks for your Auto-send List select the list you created of the files you want to share. Now if a user asks for your list in a chat you will be asked if you want the list to be sent and if they want to download files you will be asked also. If you don't mind any user viewing your list and downloading your files you can right click the chat area in a channel and select Unattended Mode, this gives all users access to your list and to your shared files (it also starts your list uploading to the server so your files can be searched using the Search feature).

What you need to setup for the program to work

After installing Filetopia, run the Getting Started Wizard to set up Filetopia. This will register your Nickname, make your first list, and set various options for Filetopia. Here you will also set the directories you make public so that you may share files. You may run the Getting Started Wizard anytime you like by going to Help, Getting Started Wizard in Filetopia on the top taskbar or by pressing Ctrl+W.

How to work if you're using firewalls

Fileotopia 3.01 is prepared to work 100% with users behind firewalls. There are, however, a few things that should be considered in these cases.

In case you are experiencing problems when using a firewall you can activate an option in Options->Chat.
"Always use server for chat"
This will ensure that all your data goes through your server connection making it more likely to work (although slower) in same cases.

How to manage your collection of files

The file Lister in Filetopia is very powerful and can do many things, it can compare lists, combine lists, it can export your list for use in other programs, lists can be searched, sorted, edited and comments can be made on each file.
You can manage files both online and offline, verify file integrity with CRC scan and perform duplicate analysis on your files.
Give it a test, and discover all the posibilities

How to Copy and paste text in a channel

To copy text in a chat simply highlight the text and it will be automatically copied to the clipboard.
To paste text to be sent right-click in the area your text is typed before sending and if there is text in the clipboard you can choose Paste, or press CTRL-V.
Please Note: As a security feature, you can not copy text from a channel unless logging is permitted in that channel.

How to manage friends

To add a friend to your friends list, there are two ways: one way is to right click on their nick in any filetopia chat room, then scroll down to "add to your friends list." This will send a request to that person. When they approve your request, you will receive a popup dialogue telling you that person has been added to your list.

If you are the person of whom the request is being made, you will have the chance to add that person to your contact list. Click yes to add them to your list, and no to not add them.

You can manage your friends list by right clicking on your minimized Filetopia icon or by going to chat, then online friends. You can, 1) open private chats, 2) send someone on your list a message, or 3) share files.

When you select and right click on a person in your friends list, there are several options you can implement. Those features include: alert when that user comes online, remove the user from your friends list, you can invite them to a channel you’re in, send message, chat, and share files. The friend's properties allows you to customize many settings on a 'per user basis', it also allows you to send a request to be removed from a given friend's list.

Playing Sounds in Filetopia

Filetopia comes with a set of .wav files that can be played in a chat for all to hear. To do this, type and send the following in a chat for example: /sound wapawapa (only files users have in there /sounds directory can be heard by them).

More sound packages can be obtained from the download page of Filetopia.

There are also 7 configurable sound events: Chat alert, chat beep, new message, system sound, empty queue, disconnection and friend online. All these events can be configured from the Novice mode options window (Advanced Options).

What do the symbols in front of user’s names mean? updated for version 3.01

These symbols have the following meanings in a chat:

= Channel Owner

A channels owner can not be kicked or banned from the channel they created, they may kick and ban anyone they please and they can give Operator status to anyone.

= Operator (in public channels)

= Operator (in non-public channels)

= Helper

Operators and Helpers assist users with filetopia and enforce rules in that particular channel. An Operator can only be kicked by the owner of a channel or by a fellow Operator, they may kick anyone except for the channel owner and may give Operator status to anyone

= Gagged: user has been forbidden to speak in the channel.

= This means the user did not pass the firewall test.

= Away from the keyboard.

= The user is a trader, you will need permission to access this user's files.

= Voice chat enabled

This means the user has voice chat enabled
